What's happening with Orlando City Soccer Lake Nona training facility

Orlando Business Journal - The Buzz

Richard Bilbao

Orlando City Soccer Club is taking steps towards breaking ground on a new $20 million training facility in Lake Nona's 300-acre Sports & Performance District.

Tavistock Development Co. LLC applied for permits with the state for the 23-acre property that will house six practice fields, a training center and other amenities. Site plans submitted with the permit application show a slight tweak to previous renderings the team provided, with the training center located more closely to Performance Drive.

In addition, the plans show another look at the placement of the facility's two MLS natural-turf fields, three other natural-turf fields and one artificial-turf field.

Tavistock earlier this month also got the thumbs up from the city of Orlando for development plans that mention "Sports Village at Lake Nona," which included private athletic fields and a related 23,750-square-foot building, as previously reported by Orlando Business Journal.

The soccer complex is expected to be completed sometime next year and will become the training home for various Orlando soccer teams including the Major League Soccer Orlando City Lions, the National Women's Soccer League's Orlando Pride, the United Soccer League's Orlando B and a youth academy.

The Lions also will maintain a presence at their current training facility in Seminole County.

The new Lake Nona complex will join the southeast Orlando community's fast-growing sports district, which features the $100 million U.S. Tennis Association National Campus, as well as facilities for the USTA Florida chapter and the U.S. Professional Tennis Association.

Meanwhile, Orlando City is in the midst of building its future $155 million, 25,500-seat soccer stadium. The downtown Orlando stadium is expected to be ready for play next year and will be the home field for the Lions and the Pride.

Spirit Airlines introduces 5 new nonstop flights from OIA

Orlando Business Journal

Anjali Fluker

Orlando International Airport will soon have five new nonstop flights with Spirit Airlines' signature 'ultra-low fares' to northern destinations.

Mirimar-based Spirit Airlines Inc. (Nasdaq: SAVE) on July 20 announced the following new routes:

Boston, Mass. starting on Oct. 7

Philadelphia starting on Oct. 7

Kansas City, Mo. starting on Nov. 10

Niagara Falls, N.Y./Toronto area starting on Nov. 17

Plattsburgh, N.Y./Montreal area starting on Nov. 17

"More ultra-low fares to Orlando International Airport, the close-to-it-all hub to fun in Central Florida, is great news for cost conscious travelers," said Mark Kopczak, Spirit Airlines vice president of network planning, in a prepared statement. "These new nonstop flights will allow people from five more cities to plan that dream family getaway and have more money left over to make memories on vacation."

Spirit now has flights to 17 destinations from the Orlando airport, which just yesterday announced it welcomed 17.9 million passengers between January and May of this year.
