Hospitality Updates:

Here are the industries Orlando is the tax-friendliest to

Orlando Business Journal - the Buzz

Emma Skeels

Apparently, Orlando's rep for being welcoming isn't limited to the hospitality industry - Orlando is among the top 10 nationally and top 20 globally for tax-friendliness, according to a new study by KPMG LLP.

Orlando ranked No. 8 in the top 10 for tax-friendliness to the digital services industry. State incentives drove the region's strong results in the industry, according to the report. Orlando also ranked in the top 20 for R&D, corporate services and manufacturing.

The study looked at 51 cities all over the world to determine which had the lowest tax burdens for businesses within certain industry sectors, including digital services, research and development (R&D), corporate services and manufacturing.

Universal Orlando's Sapphire Falls resort debuts

Orlando Business Journal - The Buzz

Richard Bilbao

Universal Orlando Resort officially opened its newest hotel, the 1,000-room Loews Sapphire Falls Resort, on July 14.

Sapphire Falls, a Caribbean-style resort, is "reminiscent of a leisurely estate in the heart of the tropics, every comfort has been built into this brand new jewel," said Universal's official webpage. It is the fifth on-site hotel for the theme park company, whose Cabana Bay Beach Resort opened a couple of years ago.

Sapphire Falls boasts the largest pool at Universal, several activity and dining options like a waterfront restaurant and rum bar, and more for guests.

Hotels play a vital role in the success of a theme park. Guests who stay onsite have a higher chance of spending multiple days at the theme parks and provide a different revenue stream - hotel stays and room service.

This is the start of more hotel activity for Universal Orlando, as it is in the middle of planning yet another hotel property next to Sapphire Falls that will complement its future Volcano Bay water park, opening in 2017.

New I-Drive-area hotel to break ground in early 2017, create 45 jobs

Orlando Business Journal - The Buzz

Rachel Williams

A new 144-room hotel near International Drive may be underway by early next year.

That's according to Steve Mullins, partner with Sarasota-based Floridays Development Co.

A proposed 144-room Holiday Regency Inn will be developed by Regency HI Hospitality LLC, a joint venture between Mount Pleasant, Mich.-based Lodgco Hospitality as capital partner and management company and Floridays as the developer.

The 91,133-square-foot hotel is being planned on a 2.4-acre site at 12005 Regency Village Drive in Orlando. Project plans will be reviewed by Orange County's development review committee on Aug. 3. If approved, construction may begin in early to mid-January of 2017.

The project will create numerous temporary construction jobs and 45 new permanent jobs once built, Mullins told Orlando Business Journal. Floridays expects to choose a general contractor in November or December, which then will open new opportunities for local subcontractors.

The new hotel also will help meet the demand of Central Florida's growing tourism industry, which last year welcomed 66 million visitors to the area.

This will be Floridays third hotel in the area. The company already developed Home2 Suites by Hilton Orlando at 12107 Regency Village Drive and Floridays Resort Orlando at 12562 S. International Drive.

"We're always looking for opportunities in that market," Mullins told OBJ. "We've had tremendous success there already."
