Hospitality Updates:

NFL Pro Bowl buzz makes waves in Orlando

Orlando Business Journal - The Buzz

Richard Bilbao

News of the NFL Pro Bowl coming to town is already paying off for the region.

The Pro Bowl announcement, which happened earlier this month, has been a huge marketing generator for the region, said Visit Orlando during an Orange County Commission meeting on June 28. County leaders at the meeting approved more than $3 million in tourist development tax funds for the incentive package to host the event in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

But the impact from just the announcement has been massive, said George Aguel, president and CEO of Visit Orlando. "The announcement of Pro Bowl created 300 million impressions that could have equaled millions of dollars in resort taxes needed to get that" same impact, said Aguel, during the meeting.

He said the NFL has already begun to become one of the largest marketing platforms Orlando has had to help grow its presence and reach new customers. "This can be used to leverage the ability to attract more high-profile sporting events," he added.

The Pro Bowl's economic impact is more than $100 million with both the visiting base and the marketing impact combined. The event will also host events in the days leading to the game that will help gain more exposure for the region and draw fans that may not be able to make the game, but want to see players and take part in other activities.

Orange County leaders to discuss Airbnb zoning issues

Orlando Business Journal - The Buzz

Richard Bilbao

Orange County leaders are expected to discuss some technicalities on the ever-growing popular lodging site Airbnb.

Airbnb, a website that connects tourists and business travelers to available rooms in private homes or apartments, has always ruffled the feathers of local leaders as it tends to sometimes operate in the gray areas of local policies and regulations for lodging establishments. Orange County's commission meeting on June 27 will tackle yet another part of that - how to properly zone those that use Airbnb to sell their rooms.

Specifically, for Airbnb to operate correctly, the properties using the website would need to be zoned as an R-3 residential district, which is categorized as a "multi-family dwelling district," according to the county's planning and zoning guide.

The website has recently smoothed things over with Orange County leaders over how the county properly collected tourist development tax dollars, which are collected on stays at a hotel, motel or other short-term lodging. While not a lot of money, it was more important to establish the policies needed to accommodate Airbnb in Orange County, which is just another avenue the region's 66 million visitors could use to find local lodging.
