Universal exec shares more on brainstorming, building on-site resorts

Orlando Business Journal - The Buzz

Richard Bilbao

A tropical Caribbean island filed with natural waterfalls and lagoons is the basis behind the design of Universal Orlando's Loews Sapphire Falls Resort.

The new 1,000-room resort opened in July and now serves as the fifth on-site hotel property for Universal - a boon for the theme park, as hotels tend to be good ancillary revenue generators. Palm trees, Caribbean-style architecture and flora, tropical music and the smell of Caribbean cuisine does a great job of luring even the most city-loving tourist into a beach chair.

And sitting in a lounge chair at one of the resort's restaurants, Strong Water Tavern, is Russ Dagon, vice president and executive project director for Universal Creative, who has spearheaded the development of many of the theme park's hotels, including Sapphire Falls Resort and Cabana Bay Beach Resort.

He said building Sapphire Falls was quite the fun adventure for his team and another lesson in how to bring together different themes with modern lodging accommodations.

"There's a lot of research we do. We don't just pull themes out of the air. Most of the research says that people coming to Florida want to see a palm tree. Guests want to see that, so we knew tropical was something we wanted to do. We also knew we want to do something that's fun that people will rally around. And I also like to look at our hotels as blended, with something for everyone and something unique. I know it's weird to say something 1,000 rooms is unique, but there's a little something for someone who may want to go to Italy, say at the Portofino Bay Hotel, or come to the Caribbean here," he told Orlando Business Journal.

But it's also never a dull moment building such elaborate hotels for Dagon and his team. Challenges do rise, and he has to find a way to get passed it while maintaining the spirit of the design.

"A challenge for us on the design side was the grading [or the level of the resort] on the site. We knew we wanted a pool at a certain elevation, a lobby at a certain elevation, and we wanted to take advantage of the views of the theme park. So we had to come up with a way to get people from the lobby to the guest rooms, and that's why we came up with the waterfall feature. One of the things we recognize is that the thing that resolves the challenge often becomes what you later celebrate because you had to come up with something creative, and it becomes signature to the property," he said.

Overall, Dagon said he is most proud of how open the resort is in terms of the views and visibility to the surrounding area. The glass walls that provide a look at both the pool and Universal's lagoon add to the setting of the resort and further immerse the guests, he said.

"I love the connection of the inside to outside of this building. And most of all, I love the bridge that connects the lobby to the guest rooms because you can see it all from there - the pool, the water and the rest of the area," he said.

Skyplex trademarks may give peek at more planned for I-Drive complex

Orlando Business Journal - The Buzz

Richard Bilbao

A series of trademarks filed by the $460 million Skyplex's ownership group may hint at more attractions in play for the complex.

New York-based Skyplex Ownership Co. LLC filed trademarks for the names "Skydive," "Skyplunge," "Skyledge" and "Skyhigh," among others in June and July, according to Inventively, a patent and trademark services firm. Many of the trademarks fall under the "amusement park and theme park services" or "entertainment in the nature of an amusement park ride" purpose.

The Skyplex complex is being anchored by the 501-foot Skyscraper polercoaster, the 450-foot Skyfall drop tower, a 600-foot Skyfly zip line, the Skysurf park and a 350-room hotel, all built in and around the SkyPlaza retail, entertainment and dining center. The project is expected to open in 2019.

There's no indication on what the trademark names may mean in terms of new additions to the complex. Also, Skyplex developer Joshua Wallack declined to comment on the trademarks, but alluded he is in the middle of negotiations for more additions to the much-anticipated complex.

Skyplex is one of many new attractions underway or planned to open along International Drive in the future. Wallack is also developing the Hollywood Plaza project- a $20 million facility next to the existing Mango's Tropical Cafe that is designed to house some entertainment and dining, as well as parking.
