Hospitality News:

7 things to know about Orlando's new women's soccer league

Orlando Business Journal - The Buzz

Richard Bilbao

The Orlando Pride are set to play in the National Women's Soccer League in 2016, but if you're wondering what exactly is the NWSL and how does the organization work, we've got your back.

Orlando City Soccer Club and the NWSL announced Oct. 20 Orlando will be the 10th team playing in the 2016 season. The team will begin the season at the Orlando Citrus Bowl and will eventually move to play in the new Orlando City Soccer stadium once completed.

Here are seven things to know about the NWSL:

The NWSL began in 2012 (the first season was in 2013) and currently has nine teams playing in the metropolitan areas or cities near Boston; Chicago; Kansas City, Mo.; Houston; Portland; Seattle; Piscataway, N.J.; Boyds, Md..; and Rochester, N.Y. The new Orlando Pride will make the 10th team in the league starting next year.

Each club plays a total of 24 games (12 home and 12 away games) over a 21-week span that begins in mid-April and ends in September.

At the end of the regular season, the top four teams (based on number of scores) participate in a playoff series consisting of two semifinals with the winners of each semifinal match meeting for one final championship match — typically scheduled in October.

The league is supported by the Canadian Soccer Association, Federation of Mexican Football and the United States Soccer Foundation.

All but four of the current U.S. Women's National Soccer Team play in the NWSL. Five of the FIFA Women's World Cup All-Star teams include U.S. Women's National Team and NWSL players: goalkeeper Hope Solo and midfielder Megan Rapinoe, who play for the Seattle Reign; midfielder Carli Lloyd and defender Meghan Klingenberg, who play for the Houston Dash; and defender Julie Johnston, who plays for the Chicago Red.

The average attendance at NWSL games is 5,000, but some teams have been able to break the 10,000 attendance threshold.

The Orlando Pride is the only NWSL team in the Southeastern U.S. This is the same case for the Orlando City Soccer Lions in Major League Soccer and the new Orlando City B team joining the United Soccer League next year.

And, just like that, Orlando's fast track to being the top soccer destination in the world continues.

Uber, Orlando airport agree to terms

Orlando Business Journal - The Buzz

Richard Bilbao

Uber users looking for a ride from Orlando International Airport may be on the verge of a victory, as the ride-sharing app and airport verbally agreed to some limited-use terms, which they plan to sign off on sometime this week.

The ride-sharing app's luxury service, Uber Black, should become available at the airport fairly soon after certain agreements are met, said Marcos Marchena, general counsel for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, at its Oct. 21 meeting. The agreement, which is still being tweaked, works solely for Uber Black and says if a driver of any other Uber-related service tries to pick-up passengers at the airport, it could result in that driver's suspension and eventually termination from the service.

Uber Black is the high-end version of Uber's ride-sharing portfolio. Its website describes it as well-dressed drivers (typically in business suits) with high-end luxury sedans or nice luxury SUVs that can transport up to four passengers. Those drivers typically already are licensed to operate and thus didn't cause any trouble for local government.

However, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, who also sits on the authority board, strictly clarified that the agreement does not give Uber's low-cost option, UberX, permission to pick up at the airport because the company has not met the city's terms to conduct background checks and meet other safety compliance standards brought forth by the city for UberX drivers.

Ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft received much pushback last year in Orlando, but finally broke into the market with some regulations. However, the airport has been a tough barrier to break for the service.
